Recommend a security system for my house

I would like to install an alarm in my house. I have installed alarms in other peoples houses before but I have not thought too highly of the systems. Can anyone recommend an alarm system to me?

Thanks for reading,

The right alarm for the right house

DSC makes a good system..

DSC 580 for 4 zones plus one zone available thru the keyboard
(recomended that the 5th zone not be too far away from the keyboard 5-10ft max)

DSC 1555 for 6 zones plus one from the keyboard ...same recomendation for distance for the 7th device.

Both these systems can have additional wired zones by installing:

1. More keyboards...with one additional zone per keyboard
(Why install more keyboards? put one in your bedroom.
If you live in a high crime area then the last one to go to
sleep can set the alarm for part of the house in Stay Arming.
All the motion detectors programmed to turn on during Stay
arming will work during the night...Errrrr..., just don´t sleep
walk into these areas by mistake. It takes dicipline, but
motion detectors are your best bet...They´ll even detect
mice running about the kitchen counter top at night.)

2. Add more zones to both systems but you must get the
wireless adapter which implies a higher cost.

For a do it yourself job, I recommend something like the Interlogix ITI Concord Express or Concord. Both can be primarily wireless systems, and ITI makes probably the best wireless alarm systems available. The Concord will allow you to have a telephone module, which can let you use any phone to control the system. The programming is much easier for novices also.

Stay away from any system where the alarm panel is the keypad also. Anyone ripping the keypa/alarm panel from the wall will kill the whole system. Not so when the control panel is elswhere and the keypad is by the entry.

For future reference

I have to agree with Integrator on this one. ITI definitely makes the best system out there. Concord EXP = same price as DSC 1555/632 kit. But with a Concord EXP you get 16 wireless zones built-in to the panel. Programming is much easier than the DSC, especially for a beginner or DIY'er. Not to mention ITI wireless products are 10X better than the DSC, never had a problem with ITI equip, wish I could say the same for DSC (would have saved me a lot of time and money.)

GE has recently bought-out ITI/Interlogix, so there are many more dealers/distributors of GE/Interlogix products now.

Simply put, Yes. Now if you're wanting to monitor an existing system, there's more to it. But if you want to buy a new system and have it monitored, the answer is yes.
