Recruiters Charging a Fee

Question

I have contacted a few recruiters to help me in finding a job. These are fee-paid-by-the-employer recruiters. Two local recruiters I have recently contacted have a statement in their contract that they want me to sign. It says something to the effect of: If they are directly or indirectly involved in finding me a job and I accept and then back out of it or if I take a job and am not in it for at least 90 days through no fault of the company, I am responsible for the fee that the placement service charges the employer.

This is for a technical position. Is this the industry standard? Should I steer clear of this type of recruiter? I've dealt with out-of-town recruiters in the past and have never heard of this.

Your comments are appreciated.

That type of "fee gaurantee" has been around for more than forty years, I suppose it really isn't that unusual. Hey if they do the work they want to be paid. If you default, that's not their doing and they still want to be paid. Don't you want to be paid for your efforts?
