exterior caulk

I've noticed that the exterior caulk around our windows is starting to pull away and gap. Do I need to remove it completely before recaulking? Any tips for recaulking the exterior such as what type of caulk to use, etc?

Thanks

You should scrape and pull off as much as possible. After all other repairs, sanding, patching, etc. ana a good primer, recaulk the gaps. Anything wider than 1/4", if you have determined it is not a new problem, use backer rod (foam tubes) to stuff in the gap and caulk at the surface.

primer?

What do I need to prime? Does exterior caulk require some pre-treatment of the surfaces? Our house isn't that old, and most of the trim work is that Hardie-plank stuff. It's in good shape, and the windows are in good shape. I think it's just the caulk that sucks.

If it is just the caulk, then clean the surfaces of any dirt or loose paint and reapply caulk.
