Very Cold Apartment

Very Cold Apartment
My fiance, son and I just moved into a new apartment this year in June. We live here in Chicago and lately it has been really cool outside. It has been very very very cold inside our apartment. I am not really sure what we can do at this point. We have been running space heaters because I am not sure if I should turn the heat on yet. It feels as if there is a draft in the apartment. The place I live in used to be a big house years years ago and they divided it into two apartments. The owners did put in new windows but they are just single panel windows. If anyone has any suggestions, I would greatly appreciate them. I don't think we will be staying past a year in this apartment and if it gets too bad, we will break our lease.

Light an insense stick and hold it near a closed window edge. If there is air intrusion, the smoke will be disturbed. You might even see smoke pulled into a leak to the outside. Do this around electrical outlets and the apartment door as well. If there are leaks, and the landlord won't fix them, you may have habitability grounds to cancel the lease.

Many old houses were not insulated or, if so, inadequately insulated in walls and ceilings. Thus, heat escapes to outdoors. Drafty windows and doors loose heat. Draft stoppers beneath doors and plastic over windows can help in winter. Lack of insulation beneath floor if located on ground floor is another issue. Wearing slippers and extra clothing may be necessary during winter. Proceed with caution with space heaters and follow manufacturer's directions for safe operation. If you are paying the heating bill, then you should have good cause to break the lease. I would not delay because it won't be long until the snow flies.
