weatherstripping window A/C

What is the most efficient method to fill in the gaps beside and above a window A/C? I will be installing a window A/C in a metal building in a "window" that has been trimmed out with metal flashing. The hole is several inches larger than the window unit I will be chosing. The thickness of the wall is about four inches. What is the "cadillic" way of insulating this area? Thanks for your response.

Actually, window units should be removed and cleaned and window closed for winter. But...if not, use weather stripping to seal the gaps around the window and the air conditioner. Wrap it in a protective cover and seal up any spaces that could allow heat to escape.
