Length x Width

You can do this for each room and add the total; or just measure the entire house and estimate.

thanks for the reply, reason im asking is because i have forced air heating (which sucks) and im considering installing a humidifier for the furnace. but i need to know the square footage of the house before i know what size unit to buy.

would simply measuring the outside of the house give me a more accurate measurement to go by instead of measuring each room?
i have 3 bedrooms, a den, lr,kit, and family room, 2 baths

measuring square footage

Just measure the outside. It be the best measurement for your purposes - remember to double it for a two story. It does not have to be too precise.

You never can get everything if you try to do the inside route, because of the corners, odd shapes and you include the wall spaces which must be included. There is also a greater chance for error when you try to add all the small areas onside.
