Dual heatpumps

I live in a story townhouse that has separate heatpumps for upstairs and downstairs. We live downstairs and only use the upstairs when we have guests. In order to conserve energy we have toyed with the idea of either lowering the thermostat temperature upstairs or turning the unit off all together. We are not sure which would be best and wonder how it would impact downstairs unit?

No expert..but since the interior walls and floors aren't insulated..it will put a larger load on the lower unit. Is this an open floorplan? Or can the upper be completely closed off?

I'd try turning it down 10 degrees and see what the comfort level and run times of the lower unit are. You'll have to keep an eye on it for at least a wek or so to make a valid comparison.
