We just found out that our steam pipes are wrapped in asbestos and plan on having it removed as soon as possible. The removal companies also re-wrap the pipes, but they charge as much for this as they do for asbestos removal. This seems pretty high. Is this a job that we can do ourselves?

I would simply leave the asbestos in place (assuming it is in fairly good shape) and wrap it with 6 mil plastic and duct tape the edges. Just having the asbestos there won't hurt you, UNLESS it has raw edges that can introduce fibers into the air.
