electric usage suddenly increased 25%

I have a 2950 sq ft house with oil heat and gas appliances. My electric usage for winter months is normally in the 650 - 700 kWh range and I am usually just under the average usage for homes in this area. Suddenly in November and December my usage jumped up to over 850 kWh per month - equal to my summer usage with A/C. I have added no new appliances and we have no one home during the day. Any suggestions as to what might be driving up my usage?

Do you have a well? You could have a leak and the pump is running much more than normal. Unlikely but possible. You might have a refrigerator or chest freezer that is nearing the end of it's life and having to run a lot more to maintain temperature.

Do you have a meter where you can see the usage in progress, like the old dial that would spin? If so, you can shut down the items you know are running until the meter stops.

An oil heater has a motor to aerosolize the fuel. The system also also uses motors to distribute water or air thoughout the house.
All of these motors take electricity.

An extra 150 Kwhr/mo. doesn't seem out of the ordinary for these several motors, especially in such a large house.

Do you have numbers from last winter to compare?
