Question Vinyl Siding over Cedar Shingle?

We are obtaining estimates for the installation of vinyl siding. The house currently has cedar shingles that are in good shape and insect free. Should we have the shingles removed first, or have the siding put on right over it? We are concerned that the cedar shingles might be an attraction for bugs, even though we don't have any right now.

Cedar is naturally insect resistent. The siding should just go over it. You will probably never have an insect problem with the cedar.

Most contracts remove the cedar shingles because they want a flat surface to apply the siding. Keeping the cedar may make it wavy.

Either way, I don't think you should be worried about bugs. The wrap or insulating boards under the siding should be a barrier to bugs.
