Vinyl Siding

I'm going to install vinyl siding over hard board siding. What is the best way to do this?
I've read about installing thin 1/4 - 3/8 inch insul board to get a smooth surface.
I've also read about attaching vertical furring strips every 18 inches to attach the vinyl to.

The foam board insulation is put there to prevent moisture from developing between the two different materials. Vynal loses heat 2,000 times faster than wood. Furring strips are installed over the foam board to provide a good nailing surface for the siding. The spacing between the furring strips, the vynal and the foam board is known as a drainage plane. Which is designed to absorb any moisture that may form behind the vynal from condensation.
