Paint to prevent Mineral Salts encrustation?

Hi All,

Out in the boonies and on very hard well water. We are getting a lot of Mineral Salts encrustations on the outer panels of our swamp cooler and it is a pain to clean off every 2-weeks. Is there any paint I can use that will make this cleaning task easier?

We have a water softener and when I swap that inline for the cooler it makes about the same amount of Salt (NaCl) deposits that are a little easier to get off. But not enough to justify for keeping the softener inline.

I am wondering if there is a Marine anti-barnacle type paint or something that anyone has tried. Checking online those paints are very expensive. If one works I am happy to spring for it, but I would like to hear from any personal experiences first.

Thanks

There are marine anti stick paints but they are quite expensive and you MUST follow their application instructions. I've only used Prop Speed and it works well but I wouldn't spend the money to try in on a swamp cooler cabinet. After you clean the cabinet I would try applying auto paste wax or ski wax and leave it on.

A water softener does not remove minerals from the water. It only swaps out sodium ions for calcium and magnesium. When the water evaporates away you still have about the same amount of minerals left behind, they just taste different.

Thanks, the Wax is a great idea. I was aware of the Mineral swap with the softener, it is just that the Salt (NaCl) dissolves a little in hot water run over it, to get me started with cleaning. The Calcium based natural Salts, not so much.

Hi Pete,

No, not any more. I used to have it on a 30-second pump-out every hour, but it was taking 4-gallons per hour and made almost zero difference.

I have tested (meter) the tray water and those pump-outs barely changed the overall dissolved Salt level with virtually no change in the crusty stuff. Decided not to waste the water running our 2hp (430-ft) well pump.
