concrete exterior over plywood walls

I'm building a back room. (Brooklyn, NY)

Its wood frame and plywood. I would like to trowel on concrete as I would do over a cinder block wall but I was told the concrete wash would crack as the plywood expands and contracts at a different rate.

I was thinking about putting wonderboard over the plywood as the base for the concrete. Does this make sense? Is there a better way?
