replacing rotted post???

I have a rotted 6X6 post on the corner of my carport. (totally exposed to the outside) I have a plan I'd like to run by someone who actually knows what they are doing before I try it.... I want to cut say another 6X6 or even a 4X4 post wedge it in to lift the beam off the post ever so slightly. After that I'll put in the new 6X6 post nail it in and pull out the wedged post. Is this an acceptable way to do this? the post itself is about 7ft tall....

thanks

Cut the nails on the old 6X6 with a reciprocating saw with a metal-cutting blade. Get a helper on a ladder to steady a 4X4 next to the 6X6 and jack it straight up with a house jack under the 4X4.
Remove the old and install a new pressure-treated 6X6, lower the jack enough to fully seat the roof on the corner post, and nail the new 6X6. Then lower the jack all of the way and remove the jack and 4X4.
Good luck!
Mike
