Plywood vertical siding

Hi, my house was built in 1977 and it has plywood rough sawn vertical siding. I am having trouble finding a few sheets for replacement. The siding is 5/8" thick x 4' x 9' with 1 1/2" wide vertical grooves on 12" centers. The local Manards has some pine plywood siding that matches closely but it only comes in 8'-0" lenghts and I need 9' or 10' long. They can not order it in 9' or 10' long. Does anyone know where this can be found.

This sounds to be T1-11 siding. If you have found the match in 8 foot lengths, you may be able to order some sheets from the supplier yourself in 9 foot lengths. I did this for some plywood I needed in 10 foot lengths once.

Brick 'Siding'

I'm in an 18 year old Pulte Home in Algonquin Illinois. The original buyer 'upgraded' to a tudor front that has been nothing but trouble for me as later owner. Lots of painting and upkeep, but also some less then stellar build quality (none of the exposed trim horizontal wood pieces have any protective aluminium along the top which has led to major wood rotting, etc. I've since fixed that problem, but there remains others). Much of the bottom 1/2 of the house, that isn't covered by trim or windows/doors, is covered by a '1/4 brick' material (bricks are about 3/8-1/2" deap) that is glued to the substrate and then normally tuckpointed with grout. Some of this brick is glued to plywood (on the front of the garage) - but other is glued to that old fibreous black panel material once used for external insulation. The problem is that in the past, water has gotten behind the bricks and expanded this black material and it has become quite loose. In addition I've grown tired of the maintenance issues with the rest of the front and just want to replace with siding. I have several questions however ...... 1) Does anyone have any idea as to what the relatively small amount of brick adds to the front of the house? I have had estimates done in the past for refis and the brick was anotated but without specific value. I may just replace the whole front with siding and skip the brick. 2) If I want to replace the brick on the front of the house with another brick or rock - what type of matieral is recommended? Just go with the same type of 1/4 brick like material? What about some of these new 'no grouting required' bricks? They get nailed directly on to firing strips or something similiar. Currently - there really isn't a 'vapor wall' included in the design of the home behind the brick, the brick is purely asthetic, but the front has a southern exposure so it gets a LOT of rain, sun, etc. I did install an aluminium flashing at the top of the brick a while back that has stemmed the worst of the problem but given the ability of brick to allow water to penetrate (especially one that is only 1/2" think) I would think this would be an issue. 3) What should I use to back up the brick? Currently - there really isn't a 'vapor wall' included in the design of the home behind the brick, the brick is purely asthetic, but the front has a southern exposure so it gets a LOT of rain, sun, etc. (northern illinois) I did install an aluminium flashing at the top of the brick a while back that has stemmed the worst of the problem of the water getting behind the brick but given the ability of brick to allow water to penetrate (especially one that is only 1/2" think) I would think this would be an issue. A good external grade plywood is what I am thinking at least. What about going something like, from the existing studs, stud, vapor barrier, 1/2 solid foam aluminium backed insulation (metal out), then 1/4" exterior grade plywood, then glued to that - the brick. Obviously the problem with this approach is depth, I may have some problems around existing doors and windows if it gets too deep. botched steel sheeting job

Hi all. I'm new here but there is obviously a wealth of information kicking around with you folks. I hope someone can steer me in the right direction. I had a fellow begin this job and not finish it. I found some glaring errors in venting and with the siding installation that I had to put a stop to. The siding is my main concern just now. I went looking for a tutorial to get me up to speed with some of the general practises but found nothing. Any links to help bring me up to speed would be appreciated. Hopefully this old building will all look like one structure this summer some time. I have a tiny (200 sq/ft) floor heated clean shop (lathe, mill/drill) inside what's left of the old building you can see attached to the new construction. There is no venting along the ridge of the roof and no end venting so I can't finish much inside until the venting is looked after. I intend to change the ridge cap to a proper venting one. I'll have to cut the roofing steel away from the peak and cut away the strapping for a few inches to let the air up through the new ridge cap. Question #1 - Should I buy a diamond blade for my circular saw or invest in some electric or air nippers? The door isn't hung well, the j-channel around the windows is set to drain inside, at least one of the sheets on the walls is buckled around a window. The roof is also missing the foam inserts top and boottom. Question #2 - what's the best type of sealing foam to put under the steel on the roof sheets top and bottom? Are all those foam seals created equally? Do you guys have a preference? This is steel sheeting. I can't live with it like this so I'm going to have to learn something about steel siding installation. Inside the electical is close to being finished. I'm almost free to get back at this job and need to learn a few good habits with steel siding installation first. Question #3 - How should the j-channel be installed around a window? Or is this just common sense and silicon to get it right? Question #4 - should there be foam insterts on the top and bottom of the wall sheets as well?
