Cedar shakes over existing wood siding

Hi, folks- new user, here, with a question for someone in-the-know. I live in upstate South Carolina, in a 25 yr old house with painted T1-11 siding. I am considering an exterior update. If I recover with cedar shakes, do I need to paper over the T1-11, and do I need more than a single,top course of cedar? I will first make certain the siding is in good shape before covering it.
I don't want to perform more labor than necessary, but I want to do it right.

No Paper

You do not need paper opver the T1-11 if you apply shakes, but you normally will need to apply the shakes over 3/4" furring strips or with a 'cedar breather' type backer laid between the T1-11 and the shakes.

This allows for proper air flow and moisture mitigation out from the house as well as proper ventilation and hydration of the shakes themselves.
