Do you have to strip off the old shingle before siding with Vinyl

I have had several estoimates on putting vinyl siding on my house. The contractors have made 2 arguments:

1. remove the existing siding, installing new insullation and then instllaing the new siding.

2. Keep existing siding as is and insulate and side over it.

What is the best method?

Also, some conttractors say that there is no difference between 1/2" and 3/4" insullation (Truff R) - is thinker noticibly better or is the one recommending 1/2" trying to cut costs?

Thanks for you help!

Jim

If any of the shingles are falling off, just remove those. Otherwise you can go over the top with insulation. According to the DOW website 1/2" is R3.6 and 3/4" is R5.6 An older house with shingled walls might not have that great of wall insulation, so that extra insulation value might matter more then they claim.

Shingles under siding

You don't say what type of siding. If it is asbestos, you will need to have it removed by a licensed professional who is certified for asbestos removal. Otherwise, encapsulate it with the siding. Even drilling or nailing into asbestos can release asbestos fibers and extra precautions should be taken.

The simple answer is no, you don't have to remove the old asbestos siding.
The contractor can nail insulation panels to it (go with the 3/4"), and then install the vinyl siding over it. It's perfectly "to code" and legal to encapsulate it like that.
Good luck!
