Wink Attachment to vinyl siding

Happy Holidays,

I'm trying to mount a steel garden hose reel to the side of my house. The siding is vinyl. The problem is locating the studs. My stud finder seems to show a stud location but when I drilled thru the vinyl siding I hit nothing. I would like to avoid putting numerous holes in the siding if possible. Any suggestions as to how to find the studs?

Thanks,
JT

I guess it would depend on the kind of sheeting/siding under the vinyl if it's showing weird locations on your stud finder. While on the extreme side, since the stud finder is not working for you, I guess I would just pop the bottom of the siding panel losse so you can physically bend the panel up and start looking for nails in the existing siding/sheeting in the area your wanting to hang your hose reel. Then just make a pencil mark on the panel above the one you took loose and then reattach the loose panel. Attach hose reel as necessary.
