vinyl over masonite?

Hi everyone. I have spoken with several home improvement companies about this and I would like some input. They told me to just install vinyl siding over my existing masonite without removing the masonite. (The previous owner was supposed to replace it!) If this is true, do I install any kind of backerboard over the masonite before installing the vinyl? My house is only 1100 square feet. I have never attempted this before and am eager to do it next spring. Any input?

Thanks,

Joe

What condition is the masonite in? If its deteriorating, wet, etc you must remove it in order to inspect the condition of the sheathing under it. Personally I would remove it either way, check the sheathing, tyvek house wrap, 1/2 or 3/4" celotex and then install the siding.

It is in pretty good shape. It is just cosmetically ugly.
