red cedar siding, to oil or not to oil

I just added 1500k to the house and used red cedar shingles. The original house had them too. The trim will be painted red.

The shingles we used were untreated. What I don't want them to do is silver out, what I do want them to do it get darker with reds and browns, like the original house.

I am under the impression that I need to "oil" them to prevent them from going silver, is this true? What do I use for an oil?

TIA!

One option is to use a semi-transparent stain the color you want. Left to itself, the wood will weather to a light, gray color. This stain is quite similar to paint. It will need to be renewed periodically, as does paint.
