extend roof, increase pitch?

We have a 20+ year-old ranch with a low-pitched roof. We need to replace the roofing and to extend the roof over to the side of the new garage. We would like to extend the roof out to the front 3 or 4 feet also to cover the walkway between the side garage door and the front door. It would look much better if we could increase the pitch in the process.
Our neighbor just built right on top of his old roof when he extended the roof over his porch. He said it was easy, and it’s made it through at least one hurricane.... Plus – we plan on installing ridge and soffit vents and weren’t sure how something like that would affect ventilation.
We spoke with a contractor who helped with the garage – he said anytime you change the pitch of a roof, you’re talking big bucks, which we do not have.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Extend Roof

Your contractor is correct. It is big bucks. I am just getting ready to start one exactly as you just mentioned. I wish I could tell you something different but I can't You have to start from the ridge and come down with a whole new roof, and it will be even flatter then your existing roof. That is just how it is. Sorry.

To increase the pitch the ridge of the roof will need to be higher -even more $ . Anything less than a 3/12 pitch usually voids the shingle warranty.

thank you

*sigh* and I was hoping for a miracle cure...
anyway - is it okay to build on top of the existing roof like our neighbor did
(how would the ventilation work)? or should we tear off roofing/sheathing as my husband is inclined to do?

I have seen quite a few houses get a new roof while leaving the old roof basicaly intact. I have questions as to whether or not that is a good idea. Just because others do something doesn't always mean it is right. I have heard of firefighters having problems combatting fires on houses with double roofs. Hopefully someone with more knowledge can answer this for you.

BTW - miracle cures exist - they just cost big $$$
