Board and batten vinyl siding

Has anyone worked with the newer board and batten vinyl sidings? (Not the reverse B&B, or soffit materials)
Two questions: Is it really neccessary to run a J-channel along the bottom? It would seem to serve little purpose, and looks far more authentic without it. As far as masking any potential uneveness of the strips, if they are all applied at the same time and temperature, that shouldn't be an issue.
Two: Running the flat profile of a strip into a standard J-channel or corner strip, even when trapped by an undersill strip, doesn't look very good. I see some companies offer smaller J-channel, and was thinking that might reduce the large voids. Any ideas?
