Wood siding: Can I use an exterior primer

I guess the question is...do I need to use a primer that is specifically for wood siding? Or can I use an paint primer as a substitute?

What is your definition of a 'paint primer' ?

There are many different primers, each formulated for different applications. It is best to use the correct primer recomended by the finish paint manufacture. For most wood sidings you would use either a latex or oil exterior wood primer. You would not want to use an interior wall primer or a metal primer, etc.
