hardi/cement board ground contact?

I am going to install vinyl siding on a Peer and beam house. The problem is I need something to make contact with the ground with. Can I use Hardi board or will it abosrb moisture? I saw one post a while back talking about Azek. I can't source it locally and its very pricey. Any ideas on how I can close in around this foundation so that I can go from ground or a few inches below ground up to a level line to start my vinyl?

thanks,
Blake

You absolutely cannot use any type of cement siding for ground contact.

There are several brand of cellular PVC trim besides Azek. Kleer is another one, and you can probably find more if you ask around. Your local places can certainly order it in.

Otherwise, you may simply need to install PT wood that is rated for ground contact, then cover it with 30# felt or Tyvek, then cover that with aluminum trim coil that matches the color of your siding. (Aluminum and ACQ do not play nice, so they need to be separated.) Alternatively, you could use Pro-Trim which is 100% vinyl coil that bends just like aluminum coil.
