Stucco question
Hi
I am looking at a house to buy. I started out looking at brick houses, but today looked at a house with a stucco front.
The house is two years old and I do like it.
But...the stucco is a concern, for no other reason that I know nothing about it.
Is there upkeep? Are there cons to this?
Can anyone increase my knowledge about stucco on houses?
Thanks very much,
kathy

Kathy: Stucco is a good looking alternative to conventional siding or brick. But your concerns are valid. Today's stucco is usually installed over foam insulation board with lath and then the finishing coats, making the underlayment a little un-solid. Never lean a ladder against a stucco finish. I can't keep track of all the repairs I have to do on real estate contingencies where some dip climbed up on a ladder and the two stiles poked holes in the stucco. Easy repair, but a PITA. Be sure to keep up with any discoloration, as it could indicate a leak, and of course repair any holes you discover. You can buy stucco repair material at most big box stores. Don't be afraid of it, just keep up with it.
