Roofing shingles for siding on barn sidewalls?

Are there any reasons NOT to use fiberglass roofing shingles as siding on my barn's sidewalls? I used to see this method in the old days, but not anymore. Wondering why. Any thoughts?

Today's roofing shingles are not rated for vertical surfaces because the weight of the shingle and gravity are what seal the bottom edge of the shingle and prevent it from flapping in the wind. On mansard roofs with a steep slope, most manufacturers require additional sealant be placed under the tabs to assist in sealing the shingles.
