We own a mansard/gambrel log home. The 2nd story gable ends have T-11 plywood siding above the 1st story logs. We would like to add cedar shakes over the T-11 plywood. Could I get pro's and/or con's about this idea?

pro's: cover up ugly t1-11 siding that might not match log home very well
con's: will new look be aesthetically pleasing or should log siding be considered? The choice is up to you!
If the t1-11 is still solid, there should be no problems going over it. Adding felt underlayment before adding the shakes would be a good idea.

The reason for the cedar shakes rather than simply leaving it alone is basically looks. The logs are also cedar that have a slightly amber shade to them. We were out to the Great Lakes area recently and saw two homes in different states that had similar treatments. We thought they looked really good.

shakes vs. panels vs. siding?
what did you end up going with? i'm thinking about shingle panels cause they look like less work than the shakes. how did the install go?
