I purchased 2 beautiful outdoor lights to hang on either side of my entry door. My problem is that I have DutchLap siding and cannot figure out how to hang these lanterns. They have a small decoratively shaped back plate attached. Any ideas on how to hang these and make them watertight?

You need to remove a couple pieces of siding, have an electrician ensure there is an exterior box of the proper depth installed on the sheathing, install a 6x6 Mastermount lighting mount, reinstall the siding, and snap on the j-channel ring that covers the edge of the mastermount, then install the light, sealing the perimeter of the light base with silicone.

Anyplace that sells vinyl siding ought to be able to get you one in the color of your siding. The brand we use is mountmaster (not master mount). Here's a pic...

Amazon has a few colors... just type in "mounting block" into their search, and then narrow the results to "home improvement".
