Caulking of nailholes

New wood clapboard siding applied, should we caulk nailholes with painter's caulk and wipe smooth, or should some other compound be used that requires sanding?

Welcome to the forums!

Caulking is fine although it may shrink a little and a keen eye will be able to pick out the filled nail holes after it's painted.

Personally I wouldn't use an exterior spackling or any other filler that might require sanding. Painter's putty or window glazing will do a good job of filling the holes although it may require priming to keep it from bleeding thru certain paints.
