smooth cement-like stucco finish

i recently saw a house that had a smooth, concrete troweled finish on it's exterior. i loved the look. has anyone ever had any experience with this? if this were to be done, are the same steps taken as if it were to be a traditional stucco (vapor barrier, mesh, scratch coat, etc) up until the final coat? and what gage wire mesh shoud be used? and what kind of sealer should be used to protect it, if any?

I believe that is what we used to call plastering, and I think it is treated just like stucco.

life begins when the kids leave home and the dog dies

It is just a type of finish coat. The one I am familiar with is La Habra Santa Barbara finish.
