Overhang
I had a second floor addition completed recently and had the entier house vinyl sided. I have an overhang in the back and noticed that the contractor did not cover the "bottom" of the overhang with plywood. Instead they just installed vinyl. should they have put up plywood first then covered with vinyl?

Well, I'm not so sure. Is this soffit? Are there ventilation holes punched in it? Does the space above it run all the way to the attic?
If its just sealed up and perpendicular to the peak, yes it probably should have been insulated and covered with ply before the vinyl.
A picture would probably clear it right up.

How wide is this overhang?
Around here it is fairly standard to apply vinyl soffit directly to the rafter tails. Plywood would hinder ventilation. Often a porch ceiling will get strapping on 16" centers to attach the vinyl to if the rafters are too far apart.

I should clarify. I assumed when he said a second floor addition he was talking about the joist of said addition overhanging the wall below. Stupid to assume, I know.
