Corner Post

I have some extra Certainteed siding that I want to use to cover up our 8x8 chimney. However, I need to purchase regular white corner posts. Certainteed's corner posts are 3 1/4 wide which means that you will see a lot of the white corner on each side. Is there a smaller corner post that I can use as a corner post for a chimney? If so, where can I get something like that locally? Thank you!

Probably not, since the normal corner trim, even if you are using Miratek or conventional lumber will be 3 1/2" wide. It is a normal size.

What are you supposed to use for the top flat part of the chimney so water can flow on the outer side of the siding along the side of the chimney?

You will need a custom chimney cap. Contact your local heating and cooling company.

I found a whole box of J strips in my basement. Can you make a corner post with two J strips? The corner posts are almost $20 each and I will need 5 of them for my small chimney.

It won't look as good and will allow for water infiltration between the j channels. They will tend to pull apart from the center line as well. Why 5 for 4 corners?

Chimney is 20 ft high so I will 2 for each corner since each post is 10ft. Two corners are exposed all the way up but but the 3rd and 4th corner are only exposed when it is above the 2nd story approximately 5ft tall.

Your other alternative would be to install Miratek 5/4 trim molding the length of the chase from top to bottom. Then you could use j channel inside the trim and your siding. It will require 6 - 16' sticks of Miratek at about $13 each. Not as cheap as the corner posts.
