Alternative materials for siding repair
Hi,
What I have:
I have a detached garage with the very bottom layer of lapped siding (some kind of cheap board) rotten. I removed some of it and I can easily remove that layer without damaging the layer above it. The dimensions are approximately 1/2" thick by 12" wide and 8' long. All I need is something to slide back in place the same size that will work well.
My problem: What can I replace it with?
I don't think I can buy this stuff anymore (no markings on the back of it) and looked at James Hardi website and they don't show anything that is 12" wide. So I am thinking about using treated plywood and ripping it to this size. I want the repair to look like it was never repaired. The siding is just plain jane smooth and I think once I paint/primer it, it would be hard to notice the difference between old and new.
Suggestions?
TIA

In our area you can still purchase 12" "masonite" lap siding. I'm sure if you call around to a few lumber yards they will have something similar. It may not be made by Masonite but should match close enough. I think they usually come in 16' lengths.

No kidding? 16' will make my life a little easier even. My garage is 24' square. I guess I need to find a "real" lumberyard it sounds. I have a Menards/Lowes but couldn't come up with this stuff-unless they/I missed it. They carry georgia pacific line of stuff.
