Silent Paint Remover - Infared heat

I have a 2 story 1912 Victorian home with multiple coats of peeling lead based pait that needs removing from the clapboard exterior. Has anyone used the Silent Paint Remover and what kind of results did you have? Their website claims it doesnt get hot enough to catch the house on fire. Does it really work? I really dont want to chemically strip. I plan on this job taking a couple months of weekend work after baseball games for the kids and so on. I appreciate the input.

Welcome to the forums!

I'm not familiar with that product/tool but assume it's an electric heat gun of shorts. They work decent but not near as quick as a torch. I probably should point out that removing paint with a torch is probably illegal everywhere.... with good reason - it's easy to catch the siding on fire without noticing - it will smolder for awhile and break into a flame often when no one is looking

There are various types of paint stripper/remover alvailable - not all are like the stinky caustic remover that you brush on and scrape off.

You need to make sure you capture and dispose of all the lead based paint chips properly. Many locales regulate where/how lead chips are to be deposed.

I've seen a Pro model being used...about 8" tall x 2' wide. Because of the short(?) wavelength of the infared..it only penetrates the paint to soften it. I'm sure if you held it in front of bare wood it would finally cause some damage...but since you are right there waiting to scrape...I wouldn't think its an issue.

I've heard its one of the best things for lead paint since no dust is created.

No PRO and never used one myself...just what I've seen and heard...sure aren't cheap.

Silent Paint Remover - Infared Heat

Thanks for the input. Everyone I have talked to thinks I am crazy for wanting to strip down to bare wood. I tried scraping, priming and painting a few spots last year and those spots are already doing the same thing. I know going down to bear wood is going to give the best adhesion. As far as price the clapboard sanders cost even more and then you have the issue of the dust. I think I will go ahead and take the plunge on the infared heat remover. It may take a couple weeks as I only have weekends to work on this job but I will post the results.
