Vinyl siding ?'s
I will be vinyl siding my de-attached garage ( approx. 22' x20') this spring and have a few preliminary questions. Basically, the garage has wood clapboard siding ( about 12" wide boards) that is in pretty good shape. First question is can I vinyl side right over this or do I have to put some kind of board down prior to this over the existing. If I need to put board down is it more cost effective to just rip the old clapboards off down to the plywood. If I rip off down to plywood to you have to put anything down first. Presently it looks like there might be tar paper or something under the clapboards. Also, as far as the aluminum trim work is concerned does everything usually get sided first and then the trim work last or does the trim work coincide with putting the siding up. I have a siding book to read but these are questions right off the bat I have. Thanks

I would recommend:
1). tear off all old siding and corner boards.
2). apply a new WRB (weather resistive barrier) such as housewrap, over your existing felt paper and plywood
3). install your aluminum soffit and cladding
4). install the vinyl corners and siding last

So as far as step 3 goes, I am assuming you mean all the door and window trim also. If I decide to use aluminum stock and bend it up appropriately it should be put on before the siding. Looking at the siding someone did on the house I was wondering how all the aluminum trim is held on as I don't see any fasteners. I am assuming they bend it up and it gets mounted under the J channels when they are put on?

Yes, it's always nice to hide the fasteners, so that's why you'd probably want to do it before you put the siding on. Drip caps go above doors and windows after it is clad, and before the siding goes on.
