Another fun day in paradise

Got called to a job today to check out problems with 6 1/2" reveal solid wood horizontal lap siding. I first noted the top edges of about 5 boards had slipped out from under the lap and had curled. What?? OK , they used 7" boards and tried to do a 6 1/2" reveal, rather than an 8" board. I could correct 90% of the curls using andonized torx screws. Noticed about 100 nail pops.....not really pops, but 1" stick outs. I instructed my guys to pull the nails and replace with screws. Whoever installed the siding just placed nails, no rhyme or reason, just nailed into the OSB, not the studs. Some 12" apart, some 20" apart, some 6" apart or in groups of 3. They threw down the first nail to me.....it was a 6 penny smooth shank nail. OK, my neck veins are starting to stick out a little.
I cannot believe an entire house siding was installed using 6 penny box nails rather than screw shank HDG siding nails! I have a difficult time with them thinking they could get a reveal from a narrower board.
Totally a shoddy job. Poor owner can't afford to have the siding replaced. I told him he would probably not have to worry about removal as the wind will probably do it for him in the next few years.
I'm through venting, now. I'm OK.
DIY'ers learn from other's mistakes and flubs.

Nice story, Larry. On the plus side, it will be easy to remove! Reminds me of a house I was at a few months ago where it was similar. 6" cedar siding that was put on with a 5 3/4" - 5 7/8" reveal. Same issues. Maybe the same crew did both jobs!

This house had Thermax foil faced sheathing and I think it was sweating on the exterior side of the sheathing, or something, because of lot of the siding was kind of damp. Either that, or it was from the 1/8" overlaps.

This customer was having to put buckets in the windows to catch the water in a blowing rain. I feel the cupped boards were cupped far enough out they were acting like funnels and was going behind the flashing and consequently into the window area. We'll see tomorrow.
Man, the thermax probably was the culprit, since it doesn't breathe. Double trouble on yours.
