Question What should I do to the exterior of this home?

I recently bought this house and I am about to start some needed exterior repair then either STAIN or PAINT. Should I keep it the same existing brown or change it up to bring life to this somewhat rural.
Houses in area are all different from original cottages to modern with a mixture of style, colors, and size of lots. They are very nice, esp. compared to mine, with either brick or vinyl siding.

So how do I beautify this house? Brand color name and number will help?

What about the trim?

I am replacing all of the windows with white windows, in which I began on the back of the house.

I don't want to chicken out and keep it the same, help!
For expense purposes I guess I wouldn't go light on the body since I would think it would cost more to lighten the brown. I have a painter lined up.

Also I would like to enhance the house style and environment. i.e. no bright yellow more earthy maybe.

Yes I know, landscaping could use a lot of help. I am going to try to have some trees cut down in the next few weeks and plant grass.

We live in Arkansas. Since I bought this house I have been unable to grow grass, even though I have tried many times. Any information on the best approach is appreciated. Also, I would love some ideas to give the front a 21st century look. I so appreciate your help in this and look forward to seeing your genius ideas.

Please let me know if you can give me any advice at all.

Thank You

Hey Kathi, welcome to the forums! Nice place. I personally like stain on RB&B, because I hate paint. Our paint guy, Marksr, will chime in on the paint thingy and he has really good advice.
I think you may be taking the problem of the trees away, and it may allow you to do some serious landscaping. Without good sunlight grass has a difficult time growing. Quite possibly bringing in a load or two of topsoil may help, but it will just take time. Be patient.

Is it RB&B [plywood] or real board and batten? Plywood should be primed and painted, while plywood looks nice stained, it doesn't give the plys all the protection it needs.

It appears to me to be individual board and batten which will stain nice. Am I right in assuming there is no finish on the wood at the current time?

It can be difficult to stain wood lighter than it already is but can be done with a solid stain. Dependent on the type of wood, a light color latex stain might require an oil base primer. Obviously all painted wood should be primed. Oil primer is best because it seals the wood better than latex primer. Latex paints can be used over oil primer.

Personally I'd stain the house [maybe paint the trim white to match the windows] It can be hard to pick colors for someone else your painter can help guide you thru this process. Be sure to use quality coatings, they don't cost all that much more and are actually cheaper in the long run. Your best coatings will be found at your local paint store, not a big box paint dept where low pricing is their biggest concern.

Clear or translucent stains generally have the shortest life span while the thicker stains with more pigment [hides more of the natural wood] will last the longest. if it was my house I'd probably use CWF, I really like the look although it doesn't hold up as well as the stains with more pigment. As for prep, the house should be probably be cleaned before applying any coatings. If the coatings are sprayed - they should be back rolled or back brushed to work the coating into the wood = longer lasting paint/stain job.

Kathi[/QUOTE Looks like you need several loads of good topsoil for any type grass to take hold. Fescue and St. Augustine grow best in shadie areas. Bermuda grass requires 8 to 10 hrs of sun per day.
