Masonite Vs. Cement Board
I have to replace a 5'x5' Masonite sidewall on my Chimney. (It's rotted where it meets the roof.)
I can't find Masonite Planks at either Lowe's or H.D. However, they both carry the 'Cement Board' (Hardie?) Planks.
Appearances aside, can I just use the 'Cement' Planks since it's the entire sidewall?
I'm concerned about the thickness maybe being offset at the corners making the trim not sit flush....
For all I know - they're the same thickness and it won't be a problem.
Any pointers much appreciated.

Is it just the siding that is rotted, or is there sheathing that also needs to be replaced? FYI, the cement board is not impervious to moisture, you would need to keep it a minimum of 2" away from a roof, and any field cut edges would need to be primed and painted.
Its hard to give specific advice without pictures, and additional details. For instance, the trim you are referring to- is it the corner trim on the chimney? And is it installed on top of the sheathing or on top of the siding? (believe it or not that's common in some places.)

If I can't find any matching Masonite to replace the rotted parts with - what course might you recommend?
Thanks again.

The way it looks, you can remove the old siding, and replace it with any type of siding that you want, as long as it is not thicker. If it's thicker, it would stick out past your corner trim. Cement siding will be thinner, and that is fine. You don't want to put the new siding as tight to the roof as what you currently have it. That's probably one reason it rotted out. James Hardie recommends 2" to the roof.
