caulking

Is there any reason for me not to caulk at the bottom edges of aluminum siding? had an ant problem last year - walking under the siding and nesting.

I don't think you should...you need airflow and drainage behind the siding. Siding also needs to expand and contract with temp changes. A piece of siding can grow and shrink up to almost 1/2 inch in length, as I remember. I'd probably use a barrier spray or granules around the bottom.
