faux stone exterior panels

To spruce up the look of my house, I want to put faux stone panels on a portion of the house. Do I need to rip off the existing siding (vinyl siding) in order to do that or can i just put plywood over the existing siding and then attach the faux stone panels to the plywood?

Welcome to the forums! Not sure what panels you are referring to. If you have pictures you can post them so we can see them, or give us the manufacturer's site and model number so we can look at them. You definitely won't just plywood over existing siding, so let us have more information and we'll give you good advice.

I hope you don't mean those vacuum formed plastic sheets.

I've done them as skirting on MH, but not as an accent on a house. Even as skirting, you have to cut a lot of the black out to leave only a matching mortar line, or you will have a 4" wide vertical line and 2" mortar joints.

Had to work on a house that had been sided with the plastic stuff. They were so brittle they broke if you breathed on them. Wasted two days on trying to reinstall them after replacing rotten would underneath. I was ready to walk when I finally convinced the customer they weren't reusable.

You mean panels like on this site:******** I'd recommend removing the vinyl siding first. You want to make sure that you do everything correct the first time instead of having to possibly re-do things in a couple years. That site has some how-to guides for installation so that might be helpful to you as well.
