The math part: Depends on what size board you are using. An 8" nominal board is figured at .666. So a 1x8x12 would equal 12 x .666= 8 board feet (closer to 7.5, considering an 8" board is 7 1/2" wide). A 10" nominal board would be 12 x .833 = 10 board feet. Take the width, divide it by 12 and multiply it by the board's length. Now as far as square feet, I am assuming you are figuring an entire wall's square footage??
See Board Foot Calculator for a board foot calculator.

Board Feet

1 board foot is 1 square foot one inch thick.

length(feet) x width(feet) x nominal thickness(inches)= board feet

In Exel:

Length in column A
Width in column B
Thickness in column C
Board Feet in column D

Formula in column D: A*B*C

Hope this helps.
