window trim

I have a big west wall that has 2 small windows up high on it. I tried to improve the looks by casing them with 3 inch wood around the vinyl. It looked a little better but not good enough.
I want to make a new casing that looks better and can handle a nice shutter system
bolted on it too. These windows are small. About 16x20 roughly. If I put a new casing trim
in Douglas Fir maybe 6 or 8 inches wide would that make them look smaller or better proportioned to the wall which is a 2 story big wall with cheap wooden siding???? Any tips on what kind of joints to use?? 45s or rail and stile...I want to hinge some shutters off the casing somehow.
any info appreciated.
