Plaster over Plywood/OSB?

Hello,

can I plaster the exterior walls which have plywood /OSB?
I know that bricks would be better, but also much more expensive.

Thank you

I assume you mean stucco.... and the answer is yes but you would first need to install roofing felt covered with wire lath then 2-3 coats of stucco.

Thank you for your reply.
I would like that my house look like an European house. Smoth exterior wall.
In Germany we use plaster or kind of mortar, but the walls are made of bricks.

With stucco you mean this ?

80 lb. Base Coat Stucco-113980 at The Home Depot

Istn't that kind of gypsum? Plaster or mortar gets harder than gypsum and resists outside conditions better.

With roofing felt you mean this, right?

But what is a wire lath ?

Thank you

The stucco mix is portland cement based - formulated for exterior work. That is the roofing felt I referred to. Wire lath is something like chicken wire and is nailed up over the felt unto the plywood. It helps hold the stucco in place. I've heard there is a new felt and wire combination that would be even better but I don't know much about it.

So that portland cement based stucco mix would be fine?

I will check on that new felt with the wire mesh.

Thank you

You should actually use two layers of felt or one layer of water resistant paper and paper backed lath over plywood. Anyway two layers, no matter how you do it.

I hope your OSB is spaced 1/8" at all joints. I think real plywood needs spacing too, I forget how much.

The paper backed wire comes in rolls 100' long Plain wire is 150' long. Get 17 ga. wire not 20ga.

The stucco mix you linked to the picture of is perfectly fine but it is cheaper if you mix your own. Mason or plaster sand and Portland cement and lime, or if you can get it, plastic cement and sand alone without lime be a lot cheaper. There are a lot of places to find the formula but about 2.5-3 : 1 sand : cement by volume is a good place to start.
