Add craftsman trim to hardiplank sided house?

I'm looking to add craftsman trim to the exterior of our home windows and was curious if I can add the trim on top of this hardiplank siding and shim and caulk in gaps or if there is a trick to this?

I've painted houses where the wood trim was nailed over top of the siding - the gaps on the side were left open. Unless there is an overhang just above the wood trim the top piece will need flashing to keep rain water from collecting behind it.
