Am I doing this right? (Bad siding)

My lap siding be is swelling in some spots. I replaced a real bad piece of lap siding some time back because a corner was rotting. I just laid down a new layer of paint to help weatherproof. I'm trying to prolong the siding for 2-3 years in order to have enough money to do new siding and windows all at once. Do I have the right train of thought?

(Photo is sideways, sorry)

From what I can tell it looks like either LP or Masonite siding, and it has been nailed too hard letting moisture infiltrate. Paint may give you some time, but it's not going to get well. I tried righting your picture.

If it's masonite siding, any indentations [including nails drove too deep] in the siding should be caulked or puttied. Oil primer will seal the damaged/repaired areas better than latex primer.
