Need to get out the ladder and see what's going own.
Shingles should have over hang the roof about 1", the gutters should have be slid in under the drip edge, may be as simple as not enough hidden gutter hangers so the gutters bowed out.

Ya, further investigation is needed! It sure looks like it is still wet Can you see the underside of that at all from inside the attic? You need to determine where the water entered. It's also possible the insulation got wet and is holding water. What do the walls/ceiling look like inside?

the walls and ceiling look fine so far. had someone up on the roof last week when the gutters were cleaned and he said the roof looked fine. I am not able to go in to the attic, hoping someone can come and look at it asap. but its busy rain season here on the west coast and everyone is busy. tx for the info..

If it was just a matter of the gutter overflowing I'd expect the stucco to have dried out by now.
There has to be more going on

had a roofer look at the issue and the roof shingles are fine. its the leaf guard which is causing the trouble in that area. I just had new gutters and leaf guard installed last year so the gutters guys will have a look

Did he say it looked like water was backing up under the shingles or sheeting? Is there anyway to get a visual in the attic?

he said its dry under the shingles, cant get a good look in the attic. we had heavy rain last night and the water stain on the outside of the house is now half way down the wall. contacted the gutter company who installed the gutters/leave guard less than a year ago. they don't work weekends, waiting til Monday. they said they have never had any issues with their leaf guard.

Have you been able to observe the leak during a rain storm? Mostly to see if water is running on top of the stucco.
