Ever seen PVC trim shrink / expand?
I didn't know I had to worry about this with the PVC. Guess I need to fasten closer to the joint?

Yes, it expands and contracts with temp changes much more than wood. There are two main strategies for dealing with it. One way is to use shiplap joints and glue them with PVC cement, and then double fasten near both sides of the joint. Also recommended to use construction adhesive behind the trim in the area of joints and use screws instead of nails to fasten the trim.
Other option is to leave expansion joints that are caulked with color matched caulk. 1/8" joints with a shallow bead of caulk usually do the trick.
