Best way to attach house number?

I was repainting my house and removed some brass house numbers nailed to a vertical siding.
The nails were rusted and the wood around the nail holes rotted. Some of the nail head look like brass but I guess they are some sort of plated iron nails.

Although the nails are small and the damage is small, I wonder if there's a better way to put up the house numbers that would not cause rotting. Using rust proof nails would be a start. But they could still cause rotting of the nail hole due to capillary action.

Maybe find yourself some longer brass screws that are the right diameter. Hardware stores keep them in small drawers usually... can be hard to find. Solid brass won't rust.

I like the use of screws. Sooner or later the numbers will be removed when repainting the siding.
