Siding on siding.

We have a ~ 12 year old barn that was clad in LP SmartSide (the grooved panels that look like T-11). The cladding was affixed directly to the shed framing. It is too thin a material to have horses right up alongside it, so we're planning to put "kick boards" up approximately 40-42". We're also planning to build 1-2 additional loafing shed type structures on our property, and have decided we'll likely do a board & batten type cladding for those. We'd like all the outbuildings to match, so are looking into options to re-side (or over-side) the barn given that the siding is already not thick enough. Could we do a board & batten over the LP Smartside? If so, wrap it?

There shouldn't be any problem siding over the LP. Since it will effectively be your sheathing, you could put a wrb over it if you want to protect it against leaks.

Biggest mistake people make is due to the construction of many buildings too close to the ground... no siding should really be closer than 6" to the ground, per mfg's instructions.
