Do I need to re-side?
Have an existing barn with LP SmartSide lap panel siding, fastened directly to the studs. I've having a hard time figuring out how "correct" this is. I think I understand that if I want to insulate, I should do sheathing and moisture wrapping, then fasten the SmartSide over that. Is this the only / best solution? Would you wrap the building and put another layer of siding over it (to effectively have sheathing/wrap/siding), or leave existing barn as-is? Existing siding is in ok condition but could use some repairs. Thoughts on how to approach the new barn (will have a 24 x 24 space that we would like to condition). Existing barn does have a small area that we heat/cool and I suspect it is not currently insulated. I'm pretty sure I can't just put fiberglass insulation between the studs if the LP SmartSide is fastened directly to studs, but can someone confirm?
The existing barn has reverse board/batten siding. Any chance I can nail battens over the groove to create a true board/batten look? Want to consider going the board/batten route with the new barn and would like them to match.
Lastly - one barn will need kick boards (oak boards going up to about 40") with siding above. I suspect I need a flashing strip between the siding and the top board. Would you just fasten the kick boards directly to the studs? Sheath and wrap behind? Tack on over existing SmartSide? Unsure how to approach.

While I'm not an expert on vapor barriers and insulation, I'd cut foam boards to insert into the stud cavity rather than remove the siding. Caulking or foaming the perimeter of the foam board should allow you to add insulation with no issues.
I know of no issues adding the batten boards. You always want flashing where it's possible for rain to run down the siding and get behind the siding below.
